An increase of almost 40% in Niger's SMIG
Unchanged at 30,047 CFA francs since August 2012, the guaranteed interprofessional minimum wage is raised to 42,000 CFA francs a month, about 39.7% more. The draft decree was adopted on 22 October 2025, with no effective date announced.
Minimum wages by occupational category
A second decree sets minimum wages by category under the interprofessional collective agreement. A skilled employee should therefore compare their pay not only with the SMIG but also with the minimum for their category, which the employer or the inspectorate can specify.
ANPE and its network of regional offices
The national agency for the promotion of employment, whose statutes date from February 2023, has eight regional offices, from Agadez to Zinder by way of Niamey and Maradi, plus a branch in Birni N'Konni. This network makes registering outside the capital easier.
Contract endorsement and work cards
ANPE endorses employment and apprenticeship contracts for Nigerien and foreign employees alike and issues work cards. For an expatriate or a national of a neighbouring country, it is the body to consult before taking up the post.
A labour code adopted in 2012
Law No. 2012-045 of 25 September 2012 constitutes the labour code and replaced the 1996 ordinance. Statutory working hours have not been verified in our sources; they must appear in the contract endorsed by ANPE.
Agriculture and livestock at the heart of the economy
The primary sector accounts for almost half of GDP, driven by agriculture and livestock, and the ILO estimates informal activity at 70% of GDP. Careers in these sectors are presented on the page about agricultural and agri-food jobs.
Wage employment a small minority in 2008
According to the ILO decent work profile, self-employed and family workers made up 91.3% of the employed population in 2008, and wage earners 13% of non-agricultural workers. Formal employment was then a narrow door.
Why official unemployment looks so low
Measured unemployment stood at 2.4% in 2008. This low rate coexists with the predominance of self-employment and family work; it therefore does not signal easy access to wage employment. No recent, reliable rate has been verified.
Poverty and inflation: the 2024-2025 context
According to the World Bank via Agence Ecofin, extreme poverty reached 52.9% in 2024, with a fall to 50.1% expected thereafter, and inflation fell from 9.1% to 4.2%. Useful benchmarks for the purchasing power of the SMIG.
