Finding a job in Egypt, from Cairo to Alexandria

In Egypt, the minimum wage was raised to 6,000 Egyptian pounds a month on 1 March 2024, about 194 dollars, after which the government announced 7,000 pounds for the private sector, from a date that has not been confirmed.

A 50% increase in 2024

Announced by the presidency on 7 February 2024, the revision raised the wage floor by half with effect from 1 March. Public employees meanwhile received increases of 1,000 to 1,200 pounds, according to Agence Ecofin.

The 7,000-pound threshold

The State Information Service published two announcements: one raises the private sector minimum to 7,000 pounds, the other sets the same amount for civil servants from July. The year of application could not be verified.

Inflation weighing on salaries

Annual inflation reached 34.5% in November 2023 and 33.7% in December 2023. This context explains the successive increases in the minimum. When negotiating, always compare your offer with the current cost of living rather than with old pay scales.

Wuzzuf, a platform focused on Egypt

Wuzzuf mainly publishes Egyptian vacancies and has a section for Saudi Arabia. The site covers all sectors. On 9 October 2026, the page we consulted showed 34 vacancies, the most recent posted four days earlier. Check the date of each advert.

Cairo, the main recruitment hub

The capital concentrates head offices, multinationals and government bodies, while Alexandria offers a second significant employment pool. State your preferred city and your mobility on your profile to receive better-targeted offers.

Tourism and hospitality

Tourism remains a major employer, from reception to hotel management, with strong demand for foreign languages. The sector's occupations and their requirements are presented on our hospitality and tourism page.

Digital roles and service centres

Developers, network technicians and multilingual advisers find posts in technology companies, telecoms operators and service centres. The skills most in demand across the continent are detailed on the IT and telecoms page.

Arabic, a decisive asset

Most posts involving contact with local customers require Egyptian Arabic. International posts often accept English alone, but even an intermediate level of Arabic considerably widens your options and makes it easier to integrate into teams.

Status of foreign employees

The conditions for obtaining a work permit do not appear in the sources we verified. Ask the employer which procedures it is undertaking with the Egyptian authorities and do not start working before you have received written authorisation.

Public data on the workforce

The State Information Service has a section on the workforce, and the statistics agency CAPMAS publishes employment surveys. No recent unemployment rate was confirmed in our checks, however, so treat figures circulating online with caution.

Widening the search to nearby countries

Some employers cover several markets from Cairo, and Egyptian candidates also consider a post across the border. The pages on employment conditions in Libya and the Sudanese market describe two neighbours with very different rules and sectors.

Regional and international posts

If you are aiming for an international institution or a development bank present in Cairo, go through its official portal. These portals publish adverts free of charge, with nationality, language and experience criteria; never use a paying intermediary to access them.

Common questions about employment in Egypt

What is the minimum wage in Egypt?

It was set at 6,000 Egyptian pounds a month on 1 March 2024, about 194 dollars. The State Information Service then announced 7,000 pounds for the private sector and for civil servants, but the date of application could not be confirmed.

Which site should I use to find a job in Egypt?

Wuzzuf is a general platform focused on the Egyptian market, with a section for Saudi Arabia. Complement it with the careers pages of the companies that interest you and, for executive profiles, with professional networks and recruitment firms.

Can a foreign national work in Egypt?

Yes, provided they obtain a work permit, generally applied for by the employer. The precise rules have not been verified in our sources. Never start working on a tourist visa and have the procedure confirmed in writing.

Not always. Multinationals and service centres recruit in English or French. However, posts dealing with local customers and many administrative jobs require Arabic, which makes learning it very worthwhile.
