Working in Ghana: key figures and procedures

Ghana's daily minimum wage rose to GHS 19.97 on 1 March 2025, an increase of 10%. Growth is estimated at 5.8% in 2025 according to the AfDB, but youth unemployment remains high: 32% according to the same institution.

A minimum wage set by the day

On 20 February 2025, the National Tripartite Committee announced a national daily minimum wage of 19.97 cedis, about 1.26 dollars, applicable from 1 March 2025. The previous amount, in force since 1 January 2024, was 18.15 cedis.

And for 2026?

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has posted a document on the 2026 minimum wage. Neither the amount nor the effective date appears on the page consulted: check the official statement directly before negotiating a basic salary.

Two very different measures of unemployment

The World Bank, quoted by Agence Ecofin, puts unemployment at 3.1% in 2023. The AfDB gives 13.1%, including 14.8% for women and 32% for young people, without specifying the year. Definitions differ; always cite the source you use.

A growing economy

According to the AfDB African Economic Outlook 2026, real GDP grew by 5.6% in 2024 and 5.8% in 2025, with 5.0% forecast for 2026. Services and consumption were the main drivers in 2025.

Purchasing power under pressure

Inflation reached 23.5% in January 2025, according to Agence Ecofin. In this context, a job offer should be assessed by taking into account any benefits, such as transport or housing, and not just the nominal salary.

The ministry and the information system

The Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment steers employment policy. The Ghana Labour Market Information System is the official labour market information system; its detailed content has not been verified, but it is worth a visit before any structured search.

The work and residence permit

The Ghana Immigration Service issues a Work and Residence Permit at the request of companies. The procedure begins with a letter addressed to the Comptroller-General of Immigration. Neither the fees nor the legal basis appear on the official page consulted.

A heavy file on the employer's side

The company provides its GIPC registration, a tax clearance certificate and audited accounts. The employee adds a medical report from the immigration clinic in Accra, a criminal record certificate, the contract and a letter of support from a ministry or agency.

Active job boards

Jobberman Ghana publishes vacancies, with a section dedicated to the Accra and Tema area. Jobweb Ghana lists current 2026 vacancies. JobnetAfrica relays management posts, including in Ghana, for both local and expatriate candidates.

Agriculture: a marked decline

According to ILOSTAT projections, between 2000 and 2023 West Africa saw the sharpest fall in agriculture's share of employment, 13 points, with Ghana and Nigeria as examples. Our page agricultural jobs details this transformation.

Teachers: comparative data

Ghana is among the fifteen countries studied by the World Bank on teacher pay. Candidates for this profession should consult jobs in education for benchmarks on conditions and recruitment.

An English-speaking country among French-speaking neighbours

English-speaking Ghana is surrounded by French-speaking countries. Bilingual profiles often compare it with employment in Côte d'Ivoire and employment in Togo, where the working language, minimum wages and job boards differ.
