Working in Côte d'Ivoire: wages, contract visas and recruitment in Abidjan

In Côte d'Ivoire, the minimum wage (SMIG) has been 75,000 CFA francs a month since 1 January 2023, 25% more than before. The Labour Code dates from 2015 and foreign nationals must have their employment contract approved with a visa.

Abidjan, economic capital and pool of vacancies

Most of the adverts seen on Emploi.ci and Senjob concern Abidjan, where head offices, banks, operators and institutions are concentrated. For a job outside the metropolis, also approach professional networks and employers based locally.

An Ivorian SMIG raised by 25% in 2023

Unchanged since 2013 at 60,000 CFA francs, the guaranteed interprofessional minimum wage rose to 75,000 CFA francs on 1 January 2023. The increase was announced by the government spokesperson after the Council of Ministers meeting of 21 December 2022.

Purchasing power as measured by ANSTAT

According to the national statistics institute, cited by Agence Ecofin, purchasing power rose by 22.2% between 2015 and 2022. This overall figure says nothing about differences between sectors: compare vacancies for the same occupation instead.

The July 2015 Labour Code

Law No. 2015-532 of 20 July 2015 governs contracts, working hours, leave and termination in the Ivorian private sector. The text is referenced in NATLEX; for a specific dispute, consult the labour inspectorate or a lawyer.

Employment contract visa for non-Ivorians

Hiring a foreign national requires a visa on the employment contract. This regime stems from a 1997 order referring to AGEPE, followed by orders of February and June 2004 on fees. The competent authority today remains to be confirmed with the employer.

Agence Emploi Jeunes: three levers

The AEJ supports young people through direct employment, training and entrepreneurship, with an online registration platform. Its FAQ section sets out the eligibility conditions; the supervising ministry is not indicated there.

Young Ivorian women: a marked gap

According to ILOSTAT, the rate of young women not in employment, education or training is more than twice that of young men, with similar levels in towns and in the countryside. Informal work largely dominates youth employment in the WAEMU zone.

Ivorian construction and infrastructure

Jeune Afrique has published an analysis of the take-off of Côte d'Ivoire's construction sector, and a French training school for construction trades has set up in the country. The profiles in demand are described in our construction and civil engineering page.

Banks and the AfDB headquarters in Abidjan

Côte d'Ivoire is among the countries driving the continent's banking performance, according to Jeune Afrique. The AfDB, headquartered in Abidjan, offers internships and leadership programmes. See careers in banking and finance.

Emploi.ci, Senjob and other platforms

Emploi.ci offers vacancies and a CV database, with for example a civil engineering site manager position in Abidjan. Senjob has an Abidjan page, and Emploi Dakar publishes articles on recruitment by Ivorian companies such as CIE.

Comparing with Ghana and Burkina Faso

Bilingual profiles can look towards the Ghanaian market, which is English-speaking, and candidates from the subregion towards Burkina Faso. Minimum wages, working languages and formalities for foreign nationals differ from one country to another.

Ivorian data still missing

The unemployment rate, the quantified share of informal work, the legal working week and the name of the employment ministry have not been verified for this guide. Be wary of sites that display these figures without a source or date.
