Hotels, restaurants and travel: finding a tourism job in Africa

Tourism employed around 24.3 million people in Africa in 2018, or 6.7% of total employment, according to the WTTC. Women hold 47% of these jobs according to UNCTAD, and Mauritius lists more than 270 tourism vacancies.

A sector with a heavy weight in African employment

In 2019, the WTTC put travel and tourism at 8.5% of African GDP, after growth of 5.6% in 2018. The African Union referred to around 21 million jobs, or nearly 6.5% of the workforce.

Projections that predate the pandemic

In 2019, the WTTC forecast the creation of 32.9 million tourism jobs in Africa by 2029. This projection predates the 2020 health crisis and should be read with caution: no update has been verified in our sources.

Leisure and business: two distinct clienteles

In 2018, the continent welcomed 67 million international arrivals, and visitor spending reached around USD 58.5 billion, 70% linked to leisure and 30% to business. Beach hotels and business hotels do not recruit the same profiles.

Mauritius, the most active market online

On MyJob, tourism and travel was the leading vacancy category in Mauritius on 9 October 2026, with 272 ads, ahead of catering with its 122 posts. The latest vacancies showed 21,000 to 30,000 rupees per month.

South Africa: arrivals pick up again

Agence Ecofin reported a 5.7% rise in international tourist arrivals in South Africa in the first quarter of 2025. Hotels, lodges and travel agencies there employ receptionists, guides and cooks, see employment in South Africa.

Morocco, Senegal and Egypt, flagship destinations

Jeune Afrique compared the tourism recovery in several countries, including Morocco, Senegal and Egypt. To target these destinations, find out about work permits and local job sites, such as those presented on the page employment in Morocco.

Benin: training young people for hospitality careers

In Benin, the national employment agency has prepared 180 young people for careers in hotels, tourism and catering, under the Azôli programme and with support from ADET. This kind of short course makes it easier to land a first job.

A sector wage floor in Mozambique

The Mozambican scale in force since July 2025 sets the minimum wage for hotels and tourism at 9,700 meticais per month. It is higher than that for agriculture but lower than those for banks and large mining companies.

Front-of-house, kitchen and behind-the-scenes roles

Receptionists, waiters, cooks, room attendants, guides, entertainers, reservation agents and housekeepers make up most of the workforce. Revenue managers, sales managers and hotel managers complete the management team, with skills close to retail and sales.

Foreign languages, the decisive asset

In establishments serving international guests, a command of English and a second foreign language, such as French, German, Italian or Chinese, often makes the difference. State your real level on your CV, because it will be tested.

Seasonality and short contracts

Many posts follow the tourist seasons, with contracts lasting a few months. Before signing, ask for details of the duration, the accommodation and meals provided, how tips and service charges are shared, and the weekly days off.

Jobs held largely by women

According to UNCTAD, cited by Jeune Afrique, women hold 47% of African tourism jobs. The sector is thus an important way into work, particularly in accommodation, catering and crafts linked to visitors.
