A more competitive Kenyan market in 2026

In February 2026 Devex observed a tighter development job market in Africa, following the dismantling of USAID and European aid cuts. Salaries and seniority levels are falling, while demand for local professionals is rising.

The National Employment Authority, Kenya's public employment service

The NEA runs public employment services, registers private recruitment agencies and oversees the employment of Kenyans abroad. It also publishes monthly vacancy lists, such as the one for November 2024. Register with it and follow its announcements.

Checking a Kenyan recruitment agency

Since the NEA keeps the register of private agencies, any agency offering a position, especially abroad, must be able to prove its registration. Ask for its number, check it with the authority and refuse any unjustified payment.

Ministry of Labour and wage institutions in Kenya

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection steers employment policy. It inaugurated the General Wages Council and the National Labour Board. The ILO is also supporting it in refining how minimum wage standards are determined.

A Kenyan minimum wage with around 56 rates

Kenya applies two wage orders, one general and one agricultural. According to the ILO (2025), the general order sets three rates per sector by area: cities, municipalities and other localities. This adds up to around 56 rates, and sectoral wage councils are largely inactive.
